Windowpanes of Eternity

Are you familiar with the Windowpanes of Eternity? All that is indelibly etched upon the Windowpanes of Eternity, will endure forever. All that is not, will not.

There are no single names, but pairings of names – two or more persons, a person and a place, a person and an event. Their interrelationship is one of destiny, of the intersection of destinies, the collision of destinies, the intermingling and interlocking of destinies.

Every destiny has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Destiny may not be coerced, cajoled, or counted on, yet destiny will always, always fulfill itself. For all that is written upon the Windowpanes of Eternity, the same rules apply, of course, but the times and spaces, the distances, between beginning, middle, and end, are too vast to measure. An end which cannot be either foreseen or foretold is forever.

The Windowpanes of Eternity are not a gallery of works of art, but a gallery of names only. The initials of lovers carved into the trunk of a tree; the prick of fingers to share blood, to become blood brothers, blood sisters; the influence of a Muse upon her poet, her artist, and the poet’s, the artist’s devotion and adoration of her; a rescue, the saving of a life, the changing of a destiny; an act of selflessness, and act of mercy, an act of grace…a vow, a promise, a sacrifice, a surrender…forgiveness…these, if genuine, are worthy of inscription on the Windowpanes of Eternity.

Antony and Cleopatra…Hadrian and Antinous…Napoleon and Josephine…Catherine the Great and Grigory Potemkin…Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra Federovna…Mayakovsky and Lili Brik…Rilke and Lou Andreas Salome…Lindbergh and Anne Spencer Morrow…Picasso and Paris…Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas…Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson…Waites Waring and Elizabeth Avery Waring…Harry Tyson Moore and Harriette Simms Moore…Juan Domingo Peron and Maria Eva Duarte…Mao Zedong and Jiang Qing…

And then there are the seemingly ordinary people, who share a destiny that is quite extraordinary…
