Whether or not something is a work of art or craft is determined more by the motivation of its creator in its creation than by the end result. It may be said that poetry is art, prose, craft, but, again, motivation is key. Art can have function as well as form, just as craft can have form as well as function. Many buildings favour form over function, others favour function over form. What is the underlying motivation for the creation of the piece?
I believe that art is motivated by surrender, while craft is motivated by dominion. It is a paradox of nature, a universal law or fulfilment, that surrender is ultimately more empowering than dominion. Surrender grants a return greater than the sacrifice made. Dominion diminishes one’s dominance to the precise extent of its exercise.
