In order for pacifism to work, one’s adversary must have a conscience. Conscience is the sense of moral correctness that governs or influences one’s actions or thoughts.
Conscience also interweaves scrupulousness, conscientiousness, and diligence with innermost thought, with consciousness. History, tradition, spirituality all influence conscience, but nothing influences it more than personal experience.
Just as people have consciences, nations have consciences. The consciences of older nations are most often stronger than those of younger nations, some of which are deprived of conscience. As a nation, a young nation, the United States is thought by many outside of the United States to be one of those so deprived.
Why is there so much violence in the United States? Why is non-violence almost a joke? Because the lack of conscience dictates violence.
