Regarding my youth, I did whatever was necessary to avoid foster care. In many cases, both with women and with men, that meant surrender to sexual – what would be now called – exploitation, though it was wholly consensual. Life does not give itself to one who tries to keep all of its advantages at once. It was service, not subservience, in calculated exchange for a roof, a bed, a bite to eat. The details will be spared you here. Suffice it to convey, again, to avoid the intervention of the law in my destiny, I avoided the breaking of the law. I did not steal. I did not vandalise. I did not not hurt anyone, unless it was his intent to hurt me first. If any crime were committed, it would have been perceived so by another adult, in blame of the adult committing it.
